About broadband connections and home networks!

Broadband connections seem to be improving all the time. Areas previously without broadband due to distance constraints are becoming a thing of the past. BUT! Connections in outlying areas with slow (512Kbps) connections can and still do suffer with regard to the options for running reliable networks.

A typical example of this is where the main telephone point is sited away from the PC requiring the internet connection. If the house is of a substantial construction i.e. period property with thick walls, large fireplaces etc., as is often the case in remote areas, then it is quite conceivable that wireless networking will not work reliably. It has also been our experience that using a telephone extension for the broadband router connection in this instance may result in a failure to connect to broadband.

Wired networks are faster than most other forms of connection but are difficult to install in most properties.

A reasonable alternative to both wireless or wired networks can be networking over power cables. This uses similar technology to 'Baby Alarms'. Whilst initial costs may look prohibitive, further investigation reveals that this option, through much more expensive than wireless, can indeed be much cheaper in the long term than the wired equivalent.

The advantages over wired networks are:

The ability to re-site your PC without the need to provide additional network wiring.

The possibility of extending your network with minimal expense.
